What does an Allen Iverson autograph cost?
The results recorded here run from a little under thirteen hundred dollars to just over six thousand. Four of them are signed cards and one is a signed ticket from his NBA debut. He signs widely and ordinary signed material is far more accessible than these figures suggest; what is recorded at auction tends to be the scarcer products.
Why did a card limited to a hundred outsell one limited to eleven?
This is the clearest example on this index of a serial number settling less than people expect. A 1999 Upper Deck Century Legends autograph numbered 73 of 100 sold for six thousand two hundred and forty dollars. A 2017-18 Panini Impeccable numbered 7 of 11, so nine times scarcer on paper, sold for twelve hundred and eighty-one. The difference is era and product: the 1999 issue is a landmark early autograph insert from the years when signed cards were still unusual, and the 2017-18 card is a late-career parallel from a period when every set contained them. Nikola Jokic's page here shows the same thing even more starkly, where a card numbered 1 of 1 sold for a fraction of one numbered 1 of 5.
Why did the item with the worst card grade sell for the most?
Because two grades are being reported and only one of them is about the card. The 1999 Century Legends result carries a card grade of Authentic, meaning no numeric grade was assigned at all, and it sold for nearly four times a 1996-97 Topps Chrome graded 9.5, which is close to perfect. Four of the five results here share an identical autograph grade of 10 and still span five times in price. Neither grade is wrong. They score how well the object and the signature were preserved, while the price is set by which card it is.
Signatures are reproduced more often than most buyers realise, by outright forgery and also by machines and assistants signing on somebody’s behalf. Every item on this page has been examined by PSA/DNA, JSA, Beckett, SGC or CGC, and this index carries nothing else. That is a deliberate restriction, and the investigation that created the modern authentication industry is worth reading, along with what a certificate actually claims.
