What does a Neil Armstrong autograph cost?
The results recorded here run from around thirteen hundred dollars for a signed index card to a little over three thousand Canadian for a cut signature mounted on a custom card. Two of the four were accepted best offers, which means the marketplace never published what was actually paid, so those figures are ceilings rather than prices. A fourth result carries the signatures of many astronauts rather than his alone and is marked accordingly. This is a thin basis for a valuation and the page says so. What is well established is the direction: his was described for years as the most sought-after signature of any living person, and prices rose sharply after he stopped signing and again after his death in 2012.
Why did he stop signing?
He is understood to have stopped in 1994, after discovering that his signature was selling for large sums and that forgeries were circulating widely. He held to it: requests received a form letter explaining that he no longer signed, and he declined even high-profile askers with a polite refusal. He also stopped sending congratulatory letters to new Eagle Scouts, which gives some sense of how completely he withdrew. One of the results on this page is described by the auction house as a 2000s item, which sits after that date; the dating is theirs rather than ours and worth noting.
Why are there thought to be more fakes than real ones?
Because four separate things produced signatures reading Neil Armstrong, and only one of them was Neil Armstrong. NASA used seven different autopen patterns for him, machine signatures sent out in answer to the flood of public requests. NASA staff also signed some requests by hand as proxies when the machines could not keep up. A member of the Apollo 11 world tour entourage became skilled at forging all three crew signatures and signed some in their place, according to Michael Collins. And after 1994, with the supply closed and the prices climbing, deliberate forgers arrived. One specialist estimates half of what he sees is fake; others put it higher. Signatures are reproduced more often than most buyers realise, by outright forgery and also by machines and assistants signing on somebody’s behalf. Every item on this page has been examined by PSA/DNA, JSA, Beckett, SGC or CGC, and this index carries nothing else. That is a deliberate restriction, and the investigation that created the modern authentication industry is worth reading, along with what a certificate actually claims.
