What does a signed Roberto Clemente card cost?
The results recorded here run from around twenty-seven thousand dollars to a hundred and twenty thousand, and five of the six are the same card: his 1955 Topps rookie, number 164. He died on the last day of 1972, aged thirty-eight, so the supply closed more than half a century ago and nothing of his came from a manufacturer signing.
Why did the card with the worst autograph grade sell for the most?
Because the grade that mattered was the other one. The dearest result, at a hundred and twenty thousand, carries an autograph graded only Authentic with no number at all, and it is the only one of the five whose CARD received a numeric grade: VG-EX 4. The other four have cards graded Authentic, which on a vintage card generally means it could not be graded numerically. One of those four is explicitly described as trimmed and still made thirty thousand dollars. On a card this scarce, a numeric card grade is the thing buyers are paying for, and the autograph grade is almost incidental.
Three of them have the same grade. Why do they differ so much?
This is worth sitting with. Three of the rookies carry an identical label - card graded Authentic, autograph graded 8 - and they sold for thirty-three thousand six hundred, forty-eight thousand, and seventy-five thousand. A spread of more than two to one on cards described in exactly the same words. What separates them is not on the holder: the placement and boldness of the signature, how the card presents, what else was in the sale that night, and who was bidding. A label is a summary, not a price.
Signatures are reproduced more often than most buyers realise, by outright forgery and also by machines and assistants signing on somebody’s behalf. Every item on this page has been examined by PSA/DNA, JSA, Beckett, SGC or CGC, and this index carries nothing else. That is a deliberate restriction, and the investigation that created the modern authentication industry is worth reading, along with what a certificate actually claims.
