What does a Shaquille O'Neal autograph cost?
The results recorded here run from under two thousand dollars to just over nine thousand. Every one of them is the same object, so read that range as the spread on a single collectible rather than as the price of his signature generally. He signs widely and ordinary signed material is far more accessible than these figures suggest.
Why is every recorded sale here the same ticket?
Because one night carries his market at this level. All five results are signed stubs from his NBA debut, Orlando Magic against the Miami Heat on 6 November 1992. A ticket stub is unusual as a collectible in that it proves attendance at a specific event, and a debut is the one game in a career that cannot be repeated. Signed stubs from that night have become the definitive early O'Neal item, which is why they dominate the auction record even though he has signed a great deal else.
Why does the highest autograph grade sell for the least?
This is the most instructive thing on the page. Each of these carries two separate grades: one for the ticket as an object and one for the signature on it. Ordered by price, the ticket grades run 8, 4, 5, 4 and 2, while the autograph grades run Authentic, 10, 10, 10 and 10. The dearest item has no numeric autograph grade at all. The cheapest has a perfect one. Four of the five share an identical Auto 10 and still range across three and a half times in price, because the ticket underneath them differs. The autograph grade scores how the signature was written and preserved; the price is being set by the condition of the thing it was written on.
Signatures are reproduced more often than most buyers realise, by outright forgery and also by machines and assistants signing on somebody’s behalf. Every item on this page has been examined by PSA/DNA, JSA, Beckett, SGC or CGC, and this index carries nothing else. That is a deliberate restriction, and the investigation that created the modern authentication industry is worth reading, along with what a certificate actually claims.
